Reader Question: Marriott & SPG Account Merger?


A LoyaltyLobby reader sent me a question by email about merging Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) accounts.

Here’s the email from the reader:

To date I have not merged my SPG points into my Marriott Rewards account.

If I understand the accounts correctly my SPG points will be converted at a 1 to 3 point ratio for Marriott points.

Do you have any suggestions on when to merge my accounts?

You cannot merge your Marriott Reward and SPG accounts yet. You can merely link them for status recognition and points transfer purposes. The programs continue to function separate until further notice.

Marriott has indicated that they plan to have combined program hopefully in 2019.

There is no downside for linking the accounts now. You can then transfer points between the accounts in real time and use points in either program when it makes most sense.

Eventually, when the program merger happens, you will end up with one account only.


It always takes time for programs to merge and especially when Marriott purchased company size of Starwood.

Marriott needs to bring the SPG hotels under Marriott Rewards agreement and system, and then have combined consumer program. This will take time and usually longer than initially planned.

Linking account makes sense because you can then use points in a program that is best for each city. Marriott could work better in one compared to SPG and the other way around.
