Alaska Airlines has launched new 40% bonus for buying Mileage Plan miles through May 7, 2018.
Alaska Airlines is not part of any global alliance but has ties with many airlines for earning and redeeming miles such as Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and Finnair.
You can access Alaska’s web page for buying and gifting miles here.
Note that Alaska Airlines doesn’t limit the number of miles that you can purchase over a calendar year like some other airlines do. They merely have a 60,000 mile limit before any possible bonus per transaction. During this sale, however, the bonus only applies when you buy 10,000 miles.
Here’s the bonus schedule:
Only purchases of 10,000 miles are eligible for this 40% bonus. You can make multiple purchases, however.
Price at 40% bonus:
The price of Alaska Airlines miles purchased at the 40% bonus level is 2.11 cents each.
Alaska Airlines miles are useful for partner awards on premium cabins on airlines such as Cathay Pacific. Just make sure that the award availability exists before you purchase the miles.
I would say that Mileage Plan miles right now are very good value when flying over the Pacific to Asia and Australia. They will become more useful to Europe once Finnair and Aer Lingus awards are bookable too (hopefully soon!).
Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:
Offer is valid while quantities last. Only purchase transactions of 10,000 miles qualify for bonus miles during the promotional period, between 6:00 AM PST April 23, 2018 and 11:59 PM PST May 7, 2018.
Miles are purchased from Points.com Inc. for a cost of $27.50 per 1,000 miles, plus a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax*, and GST/HST for Canadian residents. Miles are non-refundable and do not count toward MVP and MVP/Gold status. Offer is subject to change and all terms and conditions of the Mileage Plan Program apply.
