British Airways IT Incompetence?


We all know that British Airways is not the most competent company or even an airline when it comes to IT related issues but I was surprised when I received the following email this morning.

BA IT Incompetence

The airline was informing me that I could check “free of charge” my hand baggage as the airline was expecting my flight from London to Barcelona to be very busy tonight.


You may wonder what is the issue with this email? Well. I was actually flying on a long-haul business class ticket and can check in THREE bags up to 32 kilos already free of charge due to being Emerald.

Seems that BA here is trying to convince people who have purchased those HBO (Hand Baggage Only) fares to check their possible carry-on.

The issue I have with this that knowing how “expedient” BA’s handling agent in Barcelona is (probably the lowest cost bidder in any given market), it may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour before I could get my hand luggage if I check it in. I wouldn’t mind, if I know that the luggage would be arriving by the time I clear the EU immigration in Barcelona but that is NOT the case with BA.
