Air Canada, Lufthansa Group & United Introducing Basic Economy Fares For Transatlantic Effective June 5, 2018

Air Canada, Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa + Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines) and United Airlines are introducing Basic Economy fares for transatlantic travel on June 5, 2018, that exclude checked luggage allowance, not eligible for upgrades, are nonrefundable and cannot be combined with other fare types.

Star Alliance Gold members are, however, eligible to check one free bag on United and Lufthansa Group airlines. Other elite benefits also apply. Miles on Miles&More and MileagePlus miles are earned based on the fare paid and up to 25% on Air Canada’s program.

These are really not comparable to “basic economy” fares offered by airlines such as Norwegian, Primera and WOW because they do include meals and entertainment by default. Star Alliance Gold members get their elite benefits too including one free checked bag as long as they avoid Air Canada.

I guess that they try to upsell one checked bag for non-elite members and charge $60 per way for the privilege.
