Marriott updated its and SPG Best Rate Guarantee terms and conditions last week to be identical (read more here) by combining the worst aspects from both programs and calling it “one of the best”.
I decided to (yet again) use the SPG’s Best Price Guarantee to see how the most recent T&Cs update has affected the processing time (should be less than 24 hours) and if they follow the new rules.
You can access SPG’s page for the Best Rate Guarantee program here.

I wrote about the new hotel that was coming up in Helsinki earlier and they had made a decision to become SPG participating property (not all Design Hotels are).
The rates on the SPG’s site were bit on the high side for Helsinki (I tend to stay at the Klaus K that is part of the same hotel group that owns this St. George).
Then I remembered that Design Hotels has this “community” opening rate that is off by 50%. It was available for St. George too.
Made the reservation on SPG’s website for the lowest available room type and rate. Then filled out the form and noted that one needs to be logged in to the DesignHotels website to pull up these rates.
And submitted the form.
SPG still needs to work on the response times. It took 29 hours to get the email back that the claim had been processed and rate reduced to 118 euros per night.
Here we were comparing prepaid rates against each other. DesignHotels requires you to be logged in but it is a free “membership”. The response time was not optimal but luckily the DesignHotels still had their own inventory for this weekend available for this room type.
I tend to stay at the Klaus K in Helsinki and end up using Best Rate Guarantee most of the time. The rates outside of SPG are often cheaper.
