Here are two questions that reader left as a comment:

“It often doesn’t make sense to book base level rooms using the free weekend night certificate when higher level ones are also available such as suites.”

So you can use it for any type of room? Buy one get one free basically?

“Ambassador benefits are not applicable for award stays. Many if not most InterContinental properties do extend them nevertheless.”

How do you find out? When you show up? Or can you ask the hotel ahead of time.

1. Free Weekend Night-certificate

InterContinental hotels can choose what rooms/suites are available for sale using the Free Weekend Night-certificate rate plan. Some hotels only allow base level rooms while some allow pretty much all including suites.

IHG doesn’t reimburse hotels anything when members use these certificates. You have to book basically Best Flexible-rate and the second night is free. You can read more about booking this rate plan and see what type of rooms/suites various hotels have loaded by reading this piece.

You don’t have to buy the Ambassador membership before you can see the rates if you follow my link above. You can also book the rate plan before your certificate arrives. Just make sure that you leave plenty of time between to make sure that you have it by the time of checking in.

2. Upgrades on Award Nights

It is really up to the hotel if they decide to upgrade the Ambassador member when redeeming on points. I would say that most hotel will unless they are completely sold out. Contacting hotels in advance may or may not work in your favor.

Conclusion

Signing up and paying for InterContinental Ambassador program make sense if one stays at IC hotels more than few nights. You get guaranteed one category upgrade, 4PM check out and some other benefits.
