Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer: Always Consider First Class Redemptions Over Business Class Due To Very Small Premium

Today we want to remind our readers who are members of Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer that the program has very favorable conditions for redeeming First Class awards.

On the routes where First Class is available the premium for redeeming First Class instead of Business Class is often times so small that it makes very little sense to book the lower service class.

Singapore Airlines currently offers First Class on their own metal only on Airbus A380 aircraft which are equipped with the signature Singapore Airlines Suites. Select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft feature the Standard First Class Cabin.

How does this look in practice?

Let’s take the route Los Angeles to Tokyo as an example. Unfortunately SIA “downgraded” the aircraft on this city pair to the B777 so Suites are no longer available. You can still book regular First Class though.

For LAX – NRT in First Class is priced at 95,000 miles + $23.90 tax.

Compare to this the rate for Business Class on the same route which prices at just 85,000 miles:

In this case the difference is just 10,000 KrisFlyer miles to fly in Singapore Airlines amazing First Class compared to their still very good but obviously not very private Business Class.

The premium is so small that as long as it’s available one could say it’s a ‘no brainer’ to book First Class instead. A small cabin, premium food & champagne, personalized service and of course ground services.

Conclusion

The only reason that speaks against a First Class booking is that most of the time these reservations have to be waitlisted while Business Class is usually available for immediate confirmation. I had good luck and so far all of my bookings that were placed on waitlist have been confirmed and I was able to ticket it.

Singapore Airlines has eliminated the 15% online discount for KrisFlyer bookings some time ago but at the same time also ended the practice of charging high ticket fees such as fuel surcharges.
