A LoyaltyLobby reader sent us a question via Facebook about qualifying for SPG Platinum status in 2018 and if he should do it by August?
You can access Marriott’s page for combined program information here.
Here’s the message from the reader:
I would like to have further info pertaining to my spg status. Currently I’m holding spg platinum status since May 2017 via spg platinum challenge. Currently FY18, I have 12 eligible stays. If I completed 25 days by Aug 2018. Will I maintain spg platinum status from may 2019 or from Aug 2018?
Members have been able to qualify for SPG Platinum status based on either stays (25) or nights (50) within a calendar year.
Although SPG program essentially is merged with Marriott’s sometime early August and stays in name only, you can still qualify under these rules by staying at old SPG affiliated brands until the end of the year.
So, the reader can qualify by staying either 25 times or 50 nights at SPG properties this calendar year.
EDIT: The reader can qualify by staying 50 nights at SPG, Marriott or RItz-Carlton properties by the end of the year. If he wants to qualify based on STAYS, he needs to do them at SPG brands.
Remember that you can credit 3 rooms at a time until August. This helps if you are traveling with friends or family members who don’t care about points.
I believe that it was a wrong decision to merge these program mid-year. Just creates all kind of unnecessary confusion among members. Was someone bonus at the HQ tied to getting this completed before the end of 2018? Can be the only reasonable answer. (and a wrong one).
