Marriott Make A Green Choice-Program Points Earned Cut By 67% At Starwood Hotels


A LoyaltyLobby reader dropped me an email about very unfortunate points earning “enhancement” that Marriott had instituted over the weekend with its Make a Green Choice-program at Starwood hotels.

You previously earned 500 Starpoints per night at most full service and 250 at select service hotels for skipping daily housekeeping service (minimum two night stay). Now you earn the same number of Marriott Rewards points cutting your earnings by 67%!

Here’s the message from the reader:

I know welcome points were being devalued. My SPG Ambassador has just confirmed the 500 starpoints per night for Make a Green Choice by SPG are now being given 500 Marriott points per night, a third of their previous value!

Getting really sick and tired of the corners Marriott keeps on cutting.


Another cut while the program leadership keeps repeating that we all earn 20% more points, 20% more points, 20% more points, 20% more points….

The welcome amenity of 500 Starpoints per stay at the full service hotels (250 select service), got “enhanced” to 1,000 new points (500 at select service). This is a cut of 33%. Marriott also cut the number of Best Rate Guarantee bonus points from 2,000 Starpoints to 5,000 new points. Enhancement of 17%.

I am truly starting to doubt that a SPG Platinum traveler that have taken advantage of all these various programs to earn bonus points will earn any more under this combined program regardless what Marriott is communicating. When I am looking at my own account statement, most of the points earned are coming from these various bonuses.

The 500 points are so insignificant and properties pay only $3 for these in lieu for actually cleaning your room. I make sure that I will never use this option again. Seems that Marriott wants to make this a profit center for hotels….
