A LoyaltyLobby reader sent us a question by email about an issue that many Marriott Rewards & SPG members that have been booking multiple rooms are facing.
You can access Marriott here.
Here’s the email from the reader:
I recently had a quick holiday in Bangkok and stayed at the Westin for a total of 12 nights and 3 rooms. Room 1 & 2 – 5 nights each and room 3 – 2 nights.
Today I received my entries to my SPG account and it showed only 5 nights. I called the Platinum hotline and they mentioned that the new program allows you to collect points for all 3 rooms but only nights for the room the Member is staying in.
This differs greatly from the previous practice. As I only travel during holidays and not for work it is rare that I can get the whole family together and make up the nights to attain platinum for 2019.
I am planning to complain to the customer service but I am not sure what method / angle should I come from.
SPG allowed members to earn stay/night credit for up to three rooms when member was staying in one and Marriott Rewards was unofficially allowing this too.
This all have changed since August 18, 2018. Member can earn the night credit only for the room she/he occupies but points for up to three.
This really affects members who travel with their families or colleagues and have qualified by collecting the nights credit for all the rooms.
I believe that this is very unfortunate change in the program for many. It will surely make them less likely to choose Marriott/SPG as an option in the future if no benefits apply (when they can no longer qualify).
Marriott and SPG could have emailed those members that have collected night credits for multiple rooms in the past to clarify that this all ends on August 18. They did not do this.
