New SPG Accounts Eligible To Purchase Marriott Rewards Points (Even If Yearly Maximum Reached Previously)

A LoyaltyLobby reader dropped us a note yesterday that the new SPG accounts (opened when accounts were moved to Marriott platform) are eligible for buying points even if member has previously maxed out Starpoints and Marriott Rewards points purchases for the year.

This only works if the accounts are not consolidated or they are merged under the new SPG number.

You can access Marriott’s page for buying points here.

The purchase price:

The price of a point is 1.25 cents each.

Note that these sales are handled by Points.com and are not considered Marriott/SPG purchases in terms of earning bonus points for certain credit card usage.

Conclusion

Previously, it made sense to purchase the maximum number of Marriott Rewards points every year and redeem for Travel Packages whenever you could. No more due to the recent devaluation.

Now, it can still make sense to purchase the points if you can redeem for one of the sweet spots such as the expensive properties in Bora Bora or Maldives that can be more than $1K per night (read more here).
