Today we got a Reader Question about Emirates and how often they use buses to board or deplane passengers at their home airport in Dubai DXB.
You can access the Emirates website here.
Here’s the email from the reader:
Is it normal that EMIRATES uses buses to service a fully loaded Airbus A380? I just arrived in Dubai and there was no gate available so everybody had to take their baggage down the stairs and get into the bus.
My 74 year old mother is going to travel to Thailand later this year and EMIRATES has good Business Class deals from Amsterdam but if she has to go through this I will book another airline.
Cheers – Hans
Long story short: Yes, this happens quite often even though it’s rare with A380 aircraft. I had this happen in Doha as well when flying Qatar Airways (multiple times) and experienced bus boarding twice in Dubai.
Especially during the peak times with major departure banks the airport hubs in the middle east run out of gates and the home carriers often use remote stand positions. Unfortunately there is never any certainty when this happens and how to avoid it.
If you’re concerned about carry on baggage and how to drag it around then the only solution is to check it in and only take a small personal item in the case of the senior passenger. The Airlines do provide help though if a passenger can’t walk the stairs without support.
Unfortunately this can happen at just about any airport in the world even if you book a direct flight. I can’t speak about Amsterdam and how KLM handles their departures there but my good guess is that they also use remote stands from time to time.
