Our weekly Compensation Clinic case handles a previous stay I had at the Intercontinental Doha in late August but ended up cancelling after a few hours on property due to construction noise.
The Intercontinental Doha is one of two IC properties in the city but the only one with a beach which was the reason why I booked it for a one day stay, planning to use the pool and beach in the afternoon.
At the same time the hotel was available on point breaks for 15,000 IHG Rewards points per night.
Arriving at 1pm I immediately dropped everything in the room and went to the beach which was decent but the noise of surrounding construction was absolutely insane. The construction wasn’t part of the Intercontinental but the neighboring St. Regis beachfront villas as far as I was able to see it.
I emailed hotel management to please cancel my stay and reverse the points as I would go to a different property instead (W Doha).
The managers were very professional and apologetic about it, even waived the afternoon tea bill from the restaurant when I went to pay for it.
After two weeks the points were credited back to the account:
There was an additional 10,000 points credit added to the refund as well.
This could be quite a nice property but the annoying situation at the beach and pool is really not contributing to a relaxing stay.
Overall I think I prefer the city property where I stayed previously when comparing the two Intercontinental hotels in Doha. Not having a balcony at a beachfront property didn’t help to make the rooms any more comfortable which is a shame as they could make so much more out of this location.
I didn’t see any point staying at the IC if the beach is unusable due to noise. In that case I rather go into town and have a drink later at the more modern W hotel. As mentioned I was more than satisfied how management has handled this case especially since I just asked to refund the original points.
