Statement From IHG Regarding Ambassador & Royal Ambassador Benefit Changes In 2019

Yesterday, we wrote (access here) about the leaked changes to the IHG Rewards Club InterContinental Ambassador & Royal Ambassador programs that are expected to take place in early 2019.

IHG Rewards Club Ambassador Package

On the piece I noted that I had tried to get a statement from the IHG about the amended program (several times) but nothing was confirmed or denied. We have now, however, received a note from the spokesperson.

You can access IHG’s page for InterContinental Ambassador program here.

Here’s the statement from IHG spokesperson:

We have been analysing valuable member insights and sentiment over the past 12 months to ensure the InterContinental Ambassador program benefits are relevant to today’s travellers, while also providing a consistent experience for our global guests.

The program is amending some of the current elements that our members have deemed as low value and will introduce benefits that are better aligned with our guests needs for a consistent experience globally. The core benefits of the program have remained the same since its inception 15 years ago. We will continue to listen to our members and ensure the InterContinental Ambassador program is providing benefits that are relevant and consistent.

While some of the information you have mentioned is accurate, we look forward to sharing the full list in the coming days with an official announcement.

Here are the changes that are expected to take place in early 2019:

There is a post on FlyerTalk (access here) from which I have gathered the following info that apparently has come from an InterContinental hotel in China:

Royal Ambassador benefits starting on February 1

  • 10AM guaranteed check in (currently 8AM)
  • Complimentary restaurant breakfast for one (currently none)
  • Complimentary restaurant breakfast for two if no lounge (currently none)
  • $50 per day minibar credit and up to $200 per stay (currently unlimited minibar beverage consumption)
  • No resort or destination fees (currently no waivers)
  • Free Weekend Night Voucher (electronic)
  • Ambassador Benefits Guarantee

Ambassador benefits

  • Platinum Elite status in IHG Rewards Club (currently Gold)
  • Complimentary breakfast for one (previously none)
  • Free Weekend Night Voucher (electronic)
  • Welcome Amenity (no more welcome gifts)

Ambassador Benefits Guarantee

  • Guaranteed Room Upgrade Failure: F&B or Spa credit of $50 or 10,000 points per stay (Ambassador & Royal Ambassador)
  • 4PM Guaranteed Late Check Out Failure: F&B or Spa credit of $50 or 10,000 points per stay (Ambassador & Royal Ambassador)
  • Club InterContinental or Club InterContinental experience failure: F&B or Spa credit of $100 per DAY(Royal Ambassador only)

Conclusion

As I noted yesterday, the breakfast inclusion for both Ambassador and Royal Ambassador members would definitely be a welcomed change.

I do disagree, however, that Royal Ambassador members wouldn’t value their 8AM check in, guaranteed upgrades and late check outs, and complimentary minibar beverages (these definitely are not low value for me – although I stopped drinking adult beverages last year).

We should soon learn directly from IHG and Ambassador program what the changes for the 2019 are (if not exactly the ones above).
