A LoyaltyLobby reader sent us a question by email what to do with qualification situation in which he is less than 1,000 points of reaching the IHG Spire Elite.
You can access IHG’s page for elite benefits here.
Here’s the email from the reader:
Quick question. I am current less than 1000 point short of spire as attached.
I was due a 4 night stay but had to cancel due to an accident requiring surgery.
Anyway just checking on the best way to get the points and level up. I know benefits aren’t great but as I am so close I think it makes sense of there is an easy alternative.
Spire Elite would get the reader 100% points bonus instead of 50% on his stays and Choice benefits of 25,000 points or gifting Platinum status for someone.
1. Considering that the reader has spent 39 nights with IHG hotels this year, there is (almost guaranteed) likelihood that one or more of the stays has been incorrectly reported with less revenue than should.
This would require reader to have all the hotel folios and check what was the qualifying base amount for each specific stay this year and contact IHG if there is a discrepancy.
2. Just book the cheapest hotel for a night (make sure that the rate is $100 for the night) and either have a staycation or just pay and leave. You can ask for a settled folio at the time of checking in. The hotel may ask separate guarantee for incidentals.
I am almost certain that the first option should yield the $100 considering how much he has spent with IHG in 2018 (and how often there are small discrepancies in the favor of the hotel when points are awarded).
Although we are still waiting for the great Spire Elite benefits, reader would gain 25,000 points and an additional 50% bonus (100% instead of 50% with Spire) that on his spend should be in excess of 30,000 points.
