British Airways has very annoying feature on their online check-in that keeps returning these error messages often.
Last week when I was in Mexico City, I couldn’t do the check-in online because of this “Online checkin is not available for your flight” message when in fact it is. The error is only due to BA’s incapability to handle complex itineraries.
Here’s the message that is then presented:
So, if you have too many segments on your ticket, you cannot do the online check-in.
This may affect those trying to do last-minute seat changes as they are only available at the time of checking in. It may also lead to you getting bumped off the flight due to being last one to check in.
The situation I had in Mexico City was really hairy. I am still not used to the traffic jams there and the time getting to the airport was getting out of hand. I was sure that I would make the flight (carry-on only) but not necessarily the checking cut off time.
Luckily, they were still checking in passengers 51 minutes before scheduled departure time and hadn’t closed the flight sharply at 60 like many stations do.
Not sure why BA has this limitation on this system that other airlines don’t? I guess that the airline is not familiar with Oneworld’s around the world tickets that allow up to 16 segments (the eticket maximum).
