Financial Times: “Winter blues hit Europe’s airlines”

Financial Times yesterday had a big read about the “winter blues” that many European weaker airlines are facing during the fourth quarter when the revenues are down but bills still need to be paid.

Financial Times Winter Blues

The newspaper article noted the airlines that went to bankruptcy last year; Monarch, Airberlin and Alitalia of which only the last one is still operating while trying to find itself a new owner. There are several smaller casualties this year such as Primera. Recently FlyBe put itself up for sale and Wow Air almost collapsed.

Japan Airlines Inexpensive Domestic Upgrades (Both Business & First)

Fabulous Fridays: Vending Machine For Electronic Gadgets At Hilton Madrid Airport Hotel

Our Fabulous Fridays topic this week is about a machine that can help travelers making last minute (emergency) purchases of electronic gadgets at the airport hotel.

It’s easy to forget or lose a charging device or headphones while traveling and if you arrive at night stores are often closed so it’s good to be independent of shop opening times if it’s really urgent.

British Airways “Online Checkin Is Not Available On Your Flight” Error

British Airways has very annoying feature on their online check-in that keeps returning these error messages often.

BA Online Check In Not Available Error

Last week when I was in Mexico City, I couldn’t do the check-in online because of this “Online checkin is not available for your flight” message when in fact it is. The error is only due to BA’s incapability to handle complex itineraries.

Public Service Announcement: Bulky Items Often Can’t Be Checked As Part Of Your Baggage Allowance (And Might Require A Seat)

I witnessed an interesting situation this week when passengers who were checking in next to me for an Iberia flight to Madrid tried to check in their Star Wars Figure which actually had the size of a child.

It wasn’t possible to check in the item as part of the regular baggage allowance and required to be dropped off as bulky baggage or they were offered to purchase an extra seat for the figure.

Marriott Rewards implemented this program to their members this year. They are not, however, emailing members about their eligibility (at least not promptly) when reaching the required 50 or 75 nights.

Whine Wednesday: Irresponsible Handling Of Irregular Operations – Lufthansa At Berlin Tegel-Airport

Our Whine Wednesday topic is the irresponsible handling of passengers during irregular operations such as Lufthansa frequently does it at Berlin-Tegel airport in Germany.

Cancellations and delays happen frequently and nobody like it but airlines should be properly organized and more upfront to passengers when it really hits the fan.
