Frankfurt airport security employees belonging to the Verdi union are set to strike between 2AM – 8PM on this coming Tuesday January 15, 2019. Security employees at other German airports may join this work action.
This means that the airport is unable to screen passengers leading to cancellations of most if not all scheduled departing flights during the strike period. Lufthansa has already issued rebooking guidelines for its own, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines flights from the airport on that day.
You can access Lufthansa’s page for travel information here.
Here are the rebooking guidelines:
With immediate effect Lufthansa is offering a free-of charge rebooking to provide planning security to Lufthansa passengers.
If you have a Lufthansa/SWISS/Austrian Airlines/Brussels Airlines ticket for flights on 15.01.2019 from Frankfurt, can rebook once free of charge online under My bookings. The following conditions must be observed:
– Rebooking within the same booking class
– Tickets must be issued on/before 11.01.2019
– New date of travel must be from 11.01.2019 until 20.01.2019
– Change of origin/destination and class of service/compartment are not permitted
– For all other ticket conditions, original fare conditions apply
You have to keep in mind that the Duty to Care per EC 261/2004 applies even in a case of strikes meaning that affected airlines must provide accommodation in case of long delays and food vouchers.
They also must rebook the affected passengers to their final destinations at their (passengers’ not the airline’s) earliest opportunity even if that requires utilizing competitors.
If you are flying to/from/via Frankfurt on Tuesday, you probably should make alternate plans.
