UPDATE: Global Hotel Alliance Discovery Black Status For World Elite Mastercard Holders

Global Hotel Alliance (GHA) is a collection of brands that use Discovery program to drive business to their properties (while often having separate loyalty programs).

GHA is for a long time offered Platinum or Black status for certain credit card holders and this practice continues. On Monday we wrote (access here) about a offer Discovery Black status through December 2020 for Asia-Pacific issued World Elite Mastercards. GHA has now taken the page down.

Surprised that GHA felt that they couldn’t have this information out in the open when they offer it for World Elite Mastercard holders in the Asia-Pacific. The offer is still available, however.

Many of these chains have their own loyalty programs with points and free nights that are run concurrently with GHA’s Discovery which is a guest recognition one.

If you have Asia-Pacific issued World Elite Mastercard, it makes sense to sign up for this now because the status is valid through the end of next year, and you never know when you may find yourself in one of these participating hotels.

The DISCOVERY Black status offer is valid only for World Elite Mastercard cardholders in Asia Pacific.

DISCOVERY Black status offer is valid for World Elite Mastercard cardholders (Asia Pacific) only from now through 31 December 2019

Black status will be valid from time of successful enrolment or upgrade until 31 December of the following year

E.g. If you enroll on 1 October 2018, you will be able to enjoy Black status and associated benefits until 31 December 2019.

Earning of Qualifying Nights for the first membership year will be based on a 12-month period starting from the date of registration. In the event you do not meet the required Qualifying Nights to maintain Black Status, a second qualification period will run from 1 January of the year following the registration until 31 December of that year. Thereafter, earning of Qualifying Nights to maintain Black Status will be based on calendar years.

E.g. If you enrol on 1 October 2018, you will be able to earn room nights until 1 October 2019 to maintain your status as opposed to having to earn status by 31 December 2018. After the initial 12 month period, point calculations are based on the calendar year of January – December.

Cardholders are not eligible for a Local Experience award unless they meet the below criteria:

Local Experience Awards:

DISCOVERY members can earn Local Experience awards in three different ways:

1. After their 30th Qualifying Night at a DISCOVERY hotel in one year (Black Local Experiences);

2. Stay at a new member brand for the first time after their 1st brand stay onwards; or

3. Upon renewing their membership level (eg: Staying 30 Qualifying Nights in DISCOVERY properties within the first 12 months of their enrolling date OR 30 Qualifying Nights in DISCOVERY Property based on the Calendar year (January – December))

The Local Experience will be credited to your account within 2 weeks after the stay.

Cardholders must provide their DISCOVERY membership number during the reservation process and/or upon check-in for his or her membership to be recognised and for benefits to be extended. It is suggested that cardholders download the DISCOVERY Loyalty app to have their membership card at their fingertips for quick reference.

Only Qualifying Nights are entitled to above stated benefits and will count toward level upgrades. Qualifying Nights are defined as: Nights booked on eligible* rates.

For the avoidance of doubt Ineligible Rates shall include, without limitation: (1) Wholesaler rates; (2) OTA/Third party websites bookings (regardless of rate paid); and “opaque” bookings where the brand may or may not be known at the time of reservation; (3) tours series rates and charter rates (4) room rates for airline staff and crew where rooms are pre-booked and paid for by the airline or directly; (5) travel-industry staff rates; (6) any employee rates, employee family or employee friends discount rates; (7) other discounted rates; (8) any complimentary, free, traded or bartered night stays, or any stays in connection with gift certificates or other awards or vouchers.

*Eligible rates are those booked on discoveryloyalty.com, directly on the hotel brand websites e.g. omnihotels.com or kempinski.com) or via GDS.

Black level membership is valid for 12 or more months. World Elite Mastercard Cardholders are required to stay at least 30 Qualifying Nights at any DISCOVERY hotel within the first 12 months of their enrolling date OR 30 Qualified Nights in a calendar year (January – December) to renew their Black level membership. Should the Cardholder not fulfill the minimum night requirement within that period or the calendar year, his/her membership to DISCOVERY programme will be downgraded to Platinum level.
