A LoyaltyLobby reader sent us a note about IHG Rewards Club issue that I have come across few times too.
You can access IHG’s page for Points & Cash here.
Here’s the email from the reader:
Hotels in Istanbul are cheap nowadays – Jan-Feb is absolutely the lowest season and also tourism is not as before. I go regular to Istanbul stay always in IHG hotels. Now i see in how overpriced are the reward nights there and IHG did not do anything in the latest award changes. Requested points for reward nights in Istanbul should move down general at least by 10.000 point and in some cases like IC by 20.000 points in order to motivate bookings with points.
Recently if you book point + cash in some hotels you pay more than by the best flex rate , see this example but at least 5 others are the same. By the way this hotel was some years ago only 10.000 points and this should be again.
I think IHG should do sg about the valuation of Istanbul hotels in these days.
Checked the price for some Istanbul hotels for a weekend night next month:
I can remember when the InterContinental was 400 euros per night. Seems that the problems in the country have brought the prices to more sustainable levels.
IHG Rewards Club should have a closer look at the award night pricing at some of these destinations because it has no correlation with the paid rates like in Istanbul. I have seen similar issues often in Bali as well.
It obviously go the other way as well. When the prices are through the roof and awards are still available. IHG Rewards Club needs to be careful that their award pricing stays competitive.
You do have to keep in mind that award nights are generally cancelable and you get your points back. Some of these lower rates may be prepaid without any flexibility.
