Emirates Skywards Soliciting Silver Status for US$300 Via Targeted Email – Does It Make Sense?

We received a Facebook message from a reader who showed us an email he got from Emirates Skywards offering Silver Status for a year against a US$300 payment.

As this is the first time I’m aware of that Emirates contacts their members to sell them status outright let’s have a brief look if such an offer actually makes sense.

To learn more about Emirates and Skywards you can access their website here.

This offer seems to be specifically targeted as none of the six accounts I had a look at (friends & family) received this offer.

Here is the email our reader Majid received from Emirates last week:

Silver – even though it’s the entry level status – comes with some very decent benefits:

Free Economy Class seat selection would be worthwhile just like Priority Check-in and Priority Boarding plus enhanced luggage allowance. The lounge access is only valid in Dubai and not at the other Emirates Lounges worldwide, meaning if one would fly on the 5th freedom Hong Kong to Bangkok route you wouldn’t have lounge access on this trip.

The reader was considering taking up this offer as he said he’ll be traveling at least 3 times with family this year but wasn’t certain about the value of this offer.

Silver status doesn’t come with benefits that go beyond the member such as for lounge access. Complimentary seat selection is also extended only to the primary silver member even if all passengers are on the same reservation (Gold and Platinum travel companions can select seats for free).

He’ll likely be able to at least go to priority check in together with everybody. Priority Boarding might not work though, you can try but don’t expect it.

Silver is the entry status for Skywards and as a solo traveler I think this offer could be worth it especially if you have extended transit time in Dubai to make use of lounge access. Silver usually requires 25,000 Tier Miles or taking 25 flights in order to reach this level and flying on discounted Economy tickets that’s quite hard to reach. I think the status upsell is worth it in case one is planning at least 2 round trips on Emirates via Dubai.

There is another small detail which related to status matches. Emirates does offer a Status Match but only one level up from the status you currently hold with Skywards. In order to jump to Gold one could first upsell for US$300 to Silver and then request the status match to Gold.
