Reader Question: Transferring Points To Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer With Non-Matching Account Names?

We have an interesting Reader Question today asking about the requirements of transferring loyalty points from a third party account to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer.

Singapore Airlines Krisflyer is a popular partner of many credit card loyalty schemes as well as pretty much all major hotel programs, allowing to transfer points over.

When transferring points from one program to the other it’s usually mandatory that the names match otherwise the points won’t get credited and will possibly be in limbo for a long time before coming back. Singapore Airlines – either by lapse or design – has always been the exception to that rule.

Our reader Charmaine inquired about just that.

Dear John/Sebastian:

My husband and me maintain Krisflyer accounts with somewhat uneven balances and ideally we’d love to use them up for a flight to Tokyo this April. Each account requires a top off, one 27,000 and the other 19,000 miles to fly Business Class.

I have a substantial number of American Express Membership Rewards and could of course transfer to myself. Can I move the points to my husbands account as well? I remember you saying something like this in the past.

The short answer to this is YES, this still works in an inofficial way through various programs.

Programs usually match the name of the origin account with the deposit accounts owner but SQ KrisFlyer doesn’t do this. The reason for this could be that Singapore Airlines simply doesn’t care and for good reason: They get paid by the program that transfers the points over and why cut your revenue stream to enforce a rule that isn’t even in your own interest!?

It wasn’t too long ago we did this as well for one of our KrisFlyer accounts, transferring Amex MR points over.

You can add more than one account for Singapore Airlines to your Membership Rewards account. What you see below is once my own SQKF account and then a second one that doesn’t actually belong to me:

When you do that it will ask you to confirm the Card Name vs the account name. Don’t worry about that, just enter the number of the account you wish to transfer to.

You can then transfer the points. The transfer from Amex to KrisFlyer in our case took less than 24 hours:

I ended up consolidating points from some random accounts I manage in order to do a quick redemption and really like how flexible KrisFlyer is in that regard.

Previously I have also transferred points from Marriott and Starwood to SQ which also credited despite the name not matching.

It should work with all other transfer partners (such as Chase Ultimate Rewards) as well. You can always do a dry run and transfer a small amount. Then when it credits send a larger amount over.

As far as the parties involved I don’t see anyone getting hurt here. Singapore Airlines is getting paid, the transferring program has to pay regardless to which account the transfer goes and the member receives the miles.

The name matching is more a protection against a possible error made by the individual initiating the transfer, meaning if you enter a wrong number that doesn’t match your account the transfer would eventually be rejected. If you however make a fat finger mistake and the number entered matches someone totally different then it’s tough luck in the case of KrisFlyer transfers so better watch it!

Conclusion

This is a good way of consolidating points from different accounts where the account holder isn’t the same individual. It’s also good to help someone out who doesn’t have enough KrisFlyer points and no practical solution on hand to top up the account.

Keep in mind this example relates to SQ KrisFlyer only at this point. When you try to add an Emirates Skywards account under a different name to Amex it won’t accept it and the agent says the reason given is that the account holders don’t match. So either Emirates IT is very good, Singapore Airlines is very bad or the latter intentionally waves every transfer through to gain as much revenue as possible.
