American Airlines and China Southern launched codeshare agreement last year and as of March 20, 2019 AAdvantage members are able to earn and redeem miles on the airline.
China Southern was a SkyTeam member airline until January 1st and is rumored to become Oneworld Alliance member in the future. American Airlines owns 2.76% stake on the airline while Qatar Airways owns 5%.
You can access AA’s page for China Southern here.
Note that you earn elite qualifying miles, segments and dollars only on American Airlines codeshare flights on China Southern as the airline is not part of Oneworld Alliance (yet).
China Southern awards are not available on AA’s website. You need to request and ticket them over the phone.
Here’s the earnings chart:
This certainly opens up new opportunities for AAdvantage members to use their miles, although I don’t like that you need to phone them in.
The partnership would be more useful if AAdvantage members would earn elite qualifying miles and Dollars on China Southern flights in addition to award ones.
