Singapore’s Changi airport has a new attraction in-between the terminals that was built over the past five years called the Jewel.
I had an overnight transit in Singapore on Sunday (stayed at the Conrad) and decided to get to the airport a couple of hours early to pay the Jewel a visit. Well, my visit did not happen and only ended up seeing it from the transit shuttle that goes between the terminals.
UPDATE: Reader left a comment on Facebook that those wishing to visit Jewel during their transit time can check their carry-ons at luggage deposit facility.
Changi airport suggests, at least at this time, that your Singapore transit time should be a minimum five hours if you would like to visit the Jewel.
I hadn’t checked the information too carefully that was sent to us before the opening, but this Jewel is not within the transit area but outside. To visit you have to first clear Singapore immigration and later go through exit immigration to get back into the terminal.
The mistake I made was to exit Singapore and take my carry on to the Private Room first and then trying to get to see the Jewel. Not Allowed. But who would like to tour this Jewel with their carry-on(s) or tax free purchases?
Here are couple of shots from Jewel’s guide:
It seems that this Jewel is made more for locals to get them to come to the airport to do shopping or entertain themselves.
I cannot see visiting the Jewel during the transit time in Singapore unless I am flying on SQ first, when I can leave my carry-ons to the Private Room or if I was staying overnight at the Crowne Plaza.
It is most definitely not convenient for transit passengers having to go through the Singapore immigration twice (enter + exit) + carry their bags while doing shopping, eating or entertaining.
The structure certainly looks beautiful from the train and material that is available on the internet. I will certainly see it one day but that day wasn’t yesterday.
