Qantas To Replace Boeing 747 On Sydney-San Francisco Route With 787-9 Dreamliner From 4 December 2019

It’s almost retirement time for the Boeing 747 “Queen of the Skies” at Qantas as the airline just announced it would operate their Sydney-San Francisco route with a new Dreamliner beginning December 2019.

With the introduction of the 787-900 the carrier plans the complete retirement of their B747 Jumbo fleet by the end of 2020.

The Sydney-San Francisco Dreamliner service will operate daily, and complements Qantas’ existing Dreamliner service between Melbourne and San Francisco which operates four times per week.

Qantas released the news today (access their media center here) including commenting on the 747 retirement plans.

From 4 December 2019, customers travelling between Sydney and San Francisco will experience the Dreamliner’s next generation Economy, Premium Economy and Business cabins.

The change is timed with the phased delivery of the airline’s six additional Dreamliners as the more efficient aircraft gradually replaces the Boeing 747 aircraft on Qantas’ international network by the end of 2020. …

Qantas International Acting CEO Naren Kumar said the ongoing rollout of the Dreamliner was good news for more customers across the airline’s network.

“Our Dreamliner is the most comfortable aircraft we have ever flown. Customer feedback on the cabin environment, from the seats to the anti-jetlag measures, continues to exceed our expectations,” said Mr Kumar.

“We’ll also soon begin upgrading the cabins of our A380 aircraft which means the inflight experience for our customers travelling to the United States will have never been better.

“The 747 has been the backbone of our international fleet for more than 40 years, so it will be the end of an era and the start of another when we farewell the Queen of the Skies from flying to mainland America.

The Qantas Jumbo’s have served the airline well over the decades but in recent years flying on them has become rather dull as materials deteriorated, and I had the impression during my flights that QF doesn’t put much effort into maintaining the cabin to a high standard anymore. There is too much patchwork and scratches everywhere.

Conclusion

Sooner or later we’ll have to bid the 747-400 goodbye as far as first tier airlines are concerned. There are still quite a few new 747-800 in the skies and those will stick around for some time to come.

It’s good to hear that Qantas plans an interior refurbishment of the A380 which is my favorite aircraft nowadays together with the A350 and B747-800.
