Australian Business Traveller (access here) was reporting today that Qantas is going to make an announcement about changes to its Frequent Flyer program at an event held in Sydney on Thursday.
If any other similar announcement in the past is of any indication, Qantas Frequent Flyer members should prepare for a severe devaluation of the program that is a golden goose mine for the airline.
According to the AUSBT the Qantas Loyalty was twice as profitable for the airline than their long-haul flying in the first six months of 2018 (175M AUD).
All the airlines are in the race to the bottom when it comes to their “loyalty” programs. Not sure why they try to milk them even more considering how profitable they are at the moment. I guess that there is no end to the greed.
This leaves those trying to play the frequent flyer game suckers, myself included. I have zero loyalty anymore to any airline. I do credit flights to programs that I prefer but book mostly on price, convenience and level of service provided.
If more flyers would abandon airline affiliated credit cards and stop crediting non-airline related transactions to the programs, airlines would then need to provide true enhancements to keep members engaged and money flowing in. One can only hope.
