American Airlines AAdvantage has introduced yet another change to their program, allowing members to redeem miles for the expanded availability AAnytime Awards to Asia at a massive discount.
Previously AAnytime awards were a way to jump on an American flight and pretty much always get a seat, but the pricing was way off to the point that it hurt.
Take for example the route from Los Angeles to Tokyo. While the regular saver awards are priced at 60k miles the AAnytime Awards are now available on select dates for as little as 82.5k.
Here the regular price for a Miles SAAver ticket at 60,000 miles:
The AAnytime ticket is available for as little as 82,500 miles:
- SAAver Award
- AAnytime Award Level 1
- AAnytime Award Level 2
You can access the American Airlines award chart here to have a look in detail:
Consulting the chart it reveals the quoted price for LAX-TYO on an AAnytime Class 1 award would be 120,000 miles, however the actual discounted pricing on the AA website is 82,500 miles. A substantial discount.
A similar discount is available for the popular Los Angeles to Hong Kong route:
These discounts are currently visible for all of American Airlines destinations in Asia. Not elsewhere though, which is a bit strange (at least I wasn’t able to find any discounts availability to non-Asian destinations).
In isolated cases it can make sense to actually go for AAnytime Awards when the basic SAAver awards doesn’t yield any results. Often times, however, it can pay off to look for First Class availability instead.
Also, this discount only applies to Business Class bookings. AAnytime awards in Coach and First Class were priced at regular published levels. Also, these awards are available on American Airlines flights only and not on oneworld partner airlines.
