Hong Kong Hotels Suddenly More Reasonably Priced

Hong Kong tends to be one of the markets where hotels are rather pricey – sometimes dipping a bit over the weekends and around the holidays.

The recent demonstrations in Hong Kong have had an effect on the number of incoming tourists from the mainland and other markets. Hotel prices, as a result, have significantly dipped.

Luxury brands try to weather these crises by keeping their prices constant, not discounting and taking a serious hit on the occupancy levels. Most other hotels, however, tend to lower their prices to stimulate demand as you can see from the examples above.

I have not seen the Intercontinentals and Conrad being offered at these prices for years. Some Marriott affiliated hotels are discounting too but Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis are trying to keep their prices up.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there are some Hong Kong market specific bonus points and/or free night opportunities soon.

These demonstrations will likely have a medium term impact on hotel demand in Hong Kong. Many mainland tourists will avoid the city and business travelers will postpone their non-essential travels until things have calmed down for sure.
