When I was in Auckland last month and got a ride from a Sofitel to SO/, the taxi driver told me that the hotel had recently dropped the Sofitel part from its name due to “confusion”.
And this appears to be in process if not already competed at all other SO/ locations. The Sofitel-name is gone replaced by / followed by the name of the city.
You can access Accor’s website here.
Did someone Accor believe that all the below Sofitel extensions were or are clear to consumers?
- Sofitel Legend
- Sofitel So/So Sofitel
- MGallery by Sofitel
- (wasn’t there even Sofitel Grand?)
It seems that these SO/ hotels are still under the Sofitel leadership. Not sure what is going on with this MGallery by Sofitel that is more of a soft brand ala Hyatt’s Unbound, Hilton’s Curio, or Marriott’s Autograph Collection/Tribute. They don’t quite have the luxurious Sofitel vibe (stayed at around five).
I believe that removing Sofitel from the SO/ brand gives its more breathing space. The brand itself is something between Hyatt’s Andaz and Marriott’s W but with a club lounge.
