Don’t Make This Mistake With Your Marriott Bonvoy Choice Benefit-Gift

Marriott Bonvoy members can choose a Choice Benefit-gift when they first reach 50 nights and second one at 75 (read more here). There are some caveats when and what to choose, and many make irreversible mistakes.

SPG introduced Choice Benefit in the early 2010’s, and Marriott Bonvoy introduced them to the combined program in late 2018. Marriott Rewards members never had this reward option.

The biggest mistake that members make is with the option of adding FIVE elite qualifying nights to their yearly tally.

Even if you choose this option in January 2020, it applies to the nights consumed in 2019. It won’t give you a head start for 2020.

Choosing five nights won’t benefit you in any way at the 50 nights level unless it allows you to:

1. Reach 75 nights and get Titanium-status + another gift

OR

2. Help you to reach 100 nights, AND you have a minimum of $20K in qualifying spend.

The second point also applies for this choice at the 75 nights level. You only benefit from the 5-night option IF it allows you to reach 100 nights, AND you have the required spend.

Conclusion

This is the main mistake that I have seen readers make with this option, and we have received several messages about it. Many believe that it would apply for the year when you choose it and not for the year when it was earned.

My advice is to make the 50 and 75-night choices only after you know where you stand at the end of the year. The selection at the 75 nights is easy (free night cert) but more difficult at 50 nights (SNAs or 5 elite night credits).
