Marriott Bonvoy continues the Marriott Rewards tradition of rewarding bonus points for referring members to the program (SPG didn’t have anything similar).
Both the new and the existing members get 2,000 bonus points for each five stays that the new member consumes.

Here’s how the Reward-A-Friend promotion works:
Note that you can refer up to five members each calendar year and earn up to 50,000 bonus points.
You must use the Marriott Bonvoy form to send out the invitations. They can take up to 24 hours, however, to show up at the recipient’s email inbox. The new member needs to use the specific link to sign up, or the bonus points won’t post.
The form requires the email address of the person who you are referring to and your information.

Conclusion
This is a decent offer if you are referring friends and family members because you can earn up to 20,000 bonus points combined.
The new member is eligible for other Marriott Bonvoy general promotions. You cannot, however, combine the free night cert and bonus points offer for new member sign-ups.
