American Airlines has launched a new offer for select AAdvantage members that can earn elite status purely based on the spend on American Airlines, codeshare, or Oneworld flights.

American Airlines

The offer starts at $5,000 for Gold and $22,000 for Executive Platinum. Partner tickets Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQD) are calculated based on the fare class and number of miles flown, and thus eligible members can qualify on much lower real spend.

You can access AA’s page for Promotions here.

Here are the requirements:

Reach elite status by earning EQDs only

Exclusive opportunity to qualify for elite status in 2020

Register by Dec 30, 2019

In 2020, you have an alternative way to qualify for status and keep it through January 31, 2022. Either qualify with the normal requirements or by only earning Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs):

■ $5,000 EQDs for Gold

■ $9,000 EQDs for Platinum

■ $13,000 EQDs for Platinum Pro

■ $22,000 EQDs for Executive Platinum

Rules:

■ Register by December 30, 2019

■ Earn qualifying EQDs when traveling on eligible American Airlines and oneworld’ flights from January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2020

Conclusion

United Airlines already allow members to get 1K status by earning $15,000 in Premier Qualifying Miles (equivalent to AA’s PQDs).

It seems that the US-based programs are entirely decoupling the number of miles flown and elite status earned by making them based on spend only. This works best for those that fly on partner airlines and premium economy and business class.
