IHG Rewards Club Retires PointBreaks?

Pointbreaks are an all-time favorite feature among IHG Rewards Club members. This promo allowed to book rewards nights at reduced prices, and it usually included some sweet spots on each release.

Last week we wrote about expecting the new pointbreaks release by today, Monday, January 27th. We just learned we should not expect them for now.

You can access IHG’s page for PointBreaks here.

After not receiving the press release today with the properties list included in the promo, we contacted IHG press department asking for a statement. We just got their answer:

Here’s the statement from the IHG spokesperson:

We do not have a new IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks promotion planned currently. However, our guests can take advantage of our current offers, City Lights (advisory attached) and the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card promotion. We look forward to sharing more details on other promotions in the coming weeks.

It looks like pointbreaks are (currently) gone. The question is: are they gone for good?

Pointbreaks experienced a series of devaluations in the past years: from reducing the number of releases per year to limiting the max number of bookings you could make on a single property. The most drastic devaluation was passing from 5,000 points per night on any listed property to 3 award tiers: 5,000, 10,000, and 15,000 points per night.

But not releasing a new properties list at the end of the previous promotional period is a first, and by the language on the response by their press department, I wouldn’t hold my breath expecting a new one any time soon.

I don’t want to be overly pessimistic, but it doesn’t look good. It will be a shame if pointbreaks don’t return as it was probably the most valuable perk on IHG Rewards Club.
