Cathay Pacific Culls 30% Of Capacity & Suspends Number Of Destinations Through March 28, 2020

Cathay Pacific just yesterday asked staff members to take three weeks of unpaid leave (read more here) and today announced culling of 30% off the capacity, including suspension of many routes through March 28, 2020.

Cathay Dragon

Cathay Pacific suspends London Gatwick, Rome, Washington DC, Newark, Male, Davao, Clark, Jeju and Taichung, and reduced frequencies and capacity on other routes. Cathay Pacific and Dragon have already suspended flying to most Chinese cities except Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xiamen.

Here’s the update from Cathay Pacific:

Important information for Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon passengers travelling between 6 February and 28 March 2020

Latest update: 06 Feb 2020 21:30 HKT (GMT+8)

Overview

In view of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak, and the subsequent drop in market demand, we have reduced around 90% of Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon flights into Mainland China. There will also be significant short-term reductions – approximately 30% of our capacity – across our network over the next two months.

Destinations subject to temporary suspension until 28 March 2020 are: London Gatwick, Rome, Washington DC, Newark, Male, Davao, Clark, Jeju, Taichung, and all mainland China cities with the exception of Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Xiamen. Start dates for suspensions and frequency reductions are variable.

Conclusion

You should monitor itineraries that contain Cathay Pacific operated flights for changes and cancellations. Depending on how this virus spreads over the next few weeks, including during possible transit in Hong Kong, there could be further flight reductions.

It is quite drastic to suspend this number of destinations, but I guess that the loads on those must have been light, and the airline just decided to close them to conserve cash and resources.

This certainly is a difficult time for Cathay Pacific. Not sure how Hong Kong Airlines, a rival to Cathay, is going to survive, considering that it was about to go belly up just a couple of months go.

I am eagerly awaiting whether my Cathay Pacific flights from Perth to Hong Kong and continuing to Tokyo a few days later will operate month from now.
