Marriott Bonvoy has this week done some minor updates to the Terms and Conditions governing its elite benefits guarantees.

Dollars

Bonvoy backs up certain elite guarantees by instant cash compensation by properties that fail to deliver them.

You can access Marriott’s page for elite guarantees here.

Here’s the updated text:

i. The maximum Elite Benefits Guarantee cash compensation in the United States is $200 U.S. dollars, even if more than one guaranteed benefit is not delivered to the Elite Member. The maximum Elite Benefits Guarantee compensation paid to an Elite Member during a stay outside the United States will be the equivalent of $200 U.S. dollars paid in local currency, even if more than one guaranteed benefit is not delivered to the Elite Member.

Here’s the old one:

i. The Elite Benefits Guarantee is the maximum compensation paid to an Elite Member during a stay that is booked at least one (1) day prior to arrival. The Elite Benefits Guarantee in the United States is $200 U.S. dollars, even if more than one guaranteed benefit is not delivered to the Elite Member. The maximum Elite Benefits Guarantee compensation paid to an Elite Member during a stay outside the United States will be the equivalent of $200 U.S. dollars paid in local currency, even if more than one guaranteed benefit is not delivered to the Elite Member.

Changes:

1. You no longer need to book a minimum 1 day before arrival to be eligible for elite guarantees. Same-day reservations are fine.

2. Marriott Bonvoy clarifies that this is a CASH COMPENSATION payable USD or the currency of the country you are in.

Hotels often try to deduct the compensation from your room rate or folio expenses. You should not allow this because:

1. You won’t earn points for the amount

2. You won’t get reimbursed for the discount (for those on expense accounts)

3. It is much cheaper for the property (no need to pay those Marriott fees).

Conclusion

These elite guarantees that are backed up by cash compensation are a unique part of the Marriott Bonvoy program (and properties appear not often to be aware of them – especially when it comes to the handing out the cash)

These changes are good this time. I do, however, prefer points in lieu cash. Remember that Marriott properties pay $60 for every 10,000 points issued as compensation.
