American Express U.S. Based Membership Rewards 50% Transfer Bonus For Hilton Honors Until April 14, 2020

American Express Membership Rewards has a new promotion available for their U.S. based members, offering a 50% bonus on Membership Rewards transfers to Hilton Honors.

This promotion is showing up on my Gold Charge Card account and might be targeted as, once again, it has no expiration date listed, simply that the offer might disappear the next time you log in.

The ratio of transferring Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors isn’t ideal and I would recommend that those who are interested in Hilton points look at a Hilton Amex card instead to earn that currency directly, however with the bonus right now it might make limited sense to think about a transfer if you’re looking to book an otherwise expensive Hilton hotel on points.

The promotion runs until April 14, 2020.

You can find the transfer option in your online Amex card account under Membership Rewards – Hotel Transfers :

Keep in mind that aspirational properties such as the Conrad Rangali, Maldives or Koh Samui, Thailand have extremely high point requirements (95,000 points per night) with a cash rate hovering around US$600 per night plus tax/service fees.

This means one night would require 31,670 Membership Rewards points per night at one of the above examples. Less if you count in the 5th night free award benefit. Not a bad deal but collecting Hilton points through one of the Hilton Amex products is much better as an ongoing source. The same goes for those customers who are after Marriott points. Don’t transfer your Membership Rewards!

Conclusion

Membership Rewards points are usually better utilized transferring them to an airline program to be used for flight redemptions or cashed out through the Charles Schwab version of the Amex Platinum at US$ 1.25 cents per point.

American Express runs these transfer promotions for various partners several times per year and previous transfer partners including Hilton, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Flying Blue. I previously cleared out most of my account for Virgin and BA Avios transfers.
