Delta Air Lines today announced its SkyMiles Medallion status extension of 12 months through January 31, 2022. Also, all elite qualifying miles earned in 2020 will be rolled over to 2021.

Delta will extend club memberships, global and regional upgrade certificates by six months. These are in response to the worldwide coronavirus (COVID019) pandemic that has halted almost all travel.

You can access Delta’s page for the announcement here.

Here’s the announcement from Delta:

  • Medallion Members will be able to enjoy their current Status through 2021
  • Other program and card benefits will be extended between six months and one year

Delta SkyMiles Medallion Members will enjoy the same loyalty benefits throughout 2021 as they have in 2020. The 12-month Status extension is part of Delta’s work to offer greater flexibility as coronavirus impacts travel plans, so customers can rest assured their Status will be there when they’re ready to fly.

“On behalf of all of us at Delta, I want to thank our customers for your continued loyalty during these unprecedented times. While our focus is on keeping customers and employees safe and healthy today and always, you are a part of the Delta family and we know how important these benefits are to you,” said Sandeep Dube, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Customer Engagement and Loyalty, and CEO of Delta Vacations. “That’s why as coronavirus continues to dramatically impact travel across the globe, you don’t have to worry about your benefits – they’ll be extended so you can enjoy them when you are ready to travel again.”

Conclusion

It is quite telling that Delta decides to release this information at 9:15 AM on Sunday instead of a weekday.

All these changes are positive for program members. It is nice touch that Delta simply rolls over all elite qualifying miles earned in 2020 to 2021.

When will United Airlines and American Airlines follow?

Here’s more detailed information from Delta:

MEDALLION MEMBERS:

Medallion Members will receive a full-year extension of their current Medallion Status – this means that if you don’t requalify for the same Tier or earn a higher Tier on your own, your 2020 Status will be automatically extended through the 2021 Medallion Year.  This also includes Members that were gifted Medallion Status from another Member through Choice Benefits, or anyone who was given complimentary Medallion Status through their employer or who successfully completed a Status Match, Reclaim My Status, or other Medallion Status challenge or promotion that offered Medallion Status for 2020.

Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members will be able to select Choice Benefits through this Status extension in 2021.

Choice Benefits selections of Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates or $200 Travel Vouchers with an original expiration date between March 1 and June 30, 2020, are extended – now, they can be booked and flown by December 31, 2020. And, SkyMiles Members with Upgrade Certificates or $200 Travel Vouchers that expire after June 30, 2020, will receive an additional six months beyond the current expiration date.

All SkyMiles Members will be able to rollover all MQMs that they have at the end of 2020 into 2021. These MQMs will be counted toward earning 2022 Medallion Status. For example, if you have 40,000 MQMs in your account on December 31, 2020, all 40,000 will be rolled over and counted toward earning 2022 Medallion Status. If you have 5,000 MQMs in your account on December 31, 2020, all 5,000 will be rolled over and counted toward earning 2022 Medallion Status. This includes MQMs from travel and any Status Boosts from your Delta SkyMiles American Express Platinum or Reserve Card – all MQMs in the account at the end of 2020.

All unused Medallion drink vouchers will be extended six months from their expiration date.

SKYCLUB

All Delta Sky Club Memberships with an expiration date of March 1, 2020, or later will receive an additional six months of complimentary membership. This includes paid and complimentary memberships as well as those selected by Diamond Medallion Members through Choice Benefits. The six-month extension will go into effect immediately after the Member’s current membership expires. Members will be able to find their new expiration date in My Wallet by the end of April 2020 but even if the membership card is temporarily displaying incorrectly, rest assured that extensions will be honored and there is no need to call.

Delta Sky Club Guest Passes selected through Choice Benefits will also be extended six months beyond the expiration date.

Please also keep in mind that many Delta Sky Club locations are temporarily closed, and we have also scaled back to limited food and beverage offerings. You can find the latest news on Delta Sky Club operations on our Coronavirus Update Center.
