IHG Rewards Club One Year Member Tier & Free Night Extensions Due to Covid-19


IHG Rewards Club earlier announced status extension due to the Coronavirus pandemic for members in Greater China (read more here), and later relaxed criteria elsewhere (read more here).

IHG has today announced that they would make the Greater China policy applicable for all members and extends tiers through January 2022. Ambassador Free Weekend Nights are extended by three months and credit card Free Night Certs through December 31, 2020.

IHG is also extending the validity of free nights certificates issued in 2020 from 12 to 18 months.

Here’s the announcement:

We are automatically extending all members’ program status through January 2022. This allows our members to enjoy all of the benefits they earned in 2019. This is in addition to our previously announced changes, including the below highlights:

  • Elite qualification requirement reduction by 25 percent
  • InterContinental Ambassador complimentary status Free Night expiration extensions for 3-months (for members as of March 15, 2020)
  • Anniversary Free Night Certificate expiration extensions through Dec. 31, 2020, for our US and UK card members, and certificates issued in 2020 will have an 18-month redemption period

IHG is now inline with what Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott have all previously announced, extending elite members by a year.

There is no other choice due to lockdowns, travel restrictions, and ban. Many members do not need hotel stays in 2020.
