Qatar Airways introduced award segment fees to Privilege Club redemptions (read more here) during its award massacre back in 2018.
Privilege Club members redeeming Qatar miles were required to pay $25 for every economy class, $50 for each business class, and $75 for every first-class segment.
You can access Qatar’s page for awards here.
Qatar Airways has now removed these fees effective immediately:
we continue to offer you the ultimate flexibility with our latest travel policies, so you can have the confidence to plan now and travel when you are ready.
As we continue to reinstate flights, with 59 destinations globally this June, we want to make it easier for you to use Qmiles to fly to those destinations when the moment is right to explore together again.
That’s why, we will no longer be applying Award Flight fees, usually USD 25 per segment in Economy, USD 50 per segment in Business, or USD 75 per segment in First. You can now choose to book using Qmiles, fee-free and with ease, at qmiles.com and the mobile app.
Considering that trips on Qatar always require a minimum of four segments, if your origin or destination is not Doha, these fees have quickly added $100/$200/$300 per award. I am glad that they have now been removed.
I have a hunch that Qatar Airways may feel that they need to take some positive steps with its Privilege Club that hasn’t been a very generous program even before the last devaluation.
