Roomkey Calls It Quits

Remember those super annoying pop-ups and pop-unders for a website called Roomkey when visiting hotel sites such as Marriott, Choice, Hilton, IHG, and Wyndham?

This method of advertising was so annoying that we published a piece back in 2013 (read more here) how to modify the host file in your computer to prevent these ever showing and disturbing you again.

Well. You don’t need to worry about Roomkey anymore:

Somehow, we managed to miss this announcement from June (reader alerted us).

Conclusion

Roomkey – you won’t be missed. I never really understood what the purpose of this product was?

Hotel companies were trying to combat OTAs in the early 2010s (they still do), and they decided to launch their own.

The problem was that this Roomkey was merely showing the same inventory that hotels were pushing on their websites, and do you want to see suggestions for Wyndham’s brands when you are searching for a Marriott property?

Also, there was no independent inventory at all, and the company appears to have entirely relied on this extremely annoying advertising type.
