Marriott Rewards & Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) programs had separate status match & fast track programs that were combined under the Marriott Bonvoy, which launched a new one last week.
Existing or new Marriott Bonvoy can usually sign up Gold & Platinum status fast tracks (read more here) that don’t require the member to be an elite with any hotel loyalty program. These have now been suspended for the duration of the status match challenge.
You can access Marriott’s page for a status match with a fast track here.
The Platinum challenge, now suspended, required 16 nights during the month you signed plus the following three. If you timed the start correctly, you could have a full four months to complete.
Members have been eligible to sign up for the challenge once every three years, whether successful or not. The member status was only upgraded once the challenge was complete (no upfront).
Here’s a piece about the new match:
Marriott Rewards used to have a very liberal status match, challenge, status buyback, and they sometimes even extended the status for years without meeting the official qualification requirement (I benefited from this few times).
Let’s see if this program returns after this suspension. It probably doesn’t make much sense to allow members to do challenges every few years without ever hitting the official qualification criteria.
