Trip.com Closes Vayama

Chinese travel conglomerate Trip.com purchased Netherlands based Travix back in January 2020 that operates popular websites such as BudgetAir and CheapTickets (there is also Expedia owned CheapTickets in the US).

Travix closed Vayama-brand that operated in the Americas effective September 22, 2020, based on the notice published on its website. The other branded websites appear to be still running.

You can access Vayama here and Travix here.

Conclusion

It was perfect timing for the owners of Travix to sell the company in January 2020 and not a month or two later (likely would not have taken place or at a reduced price).

I guess that Trip.com feels that its brand is strong enough to compete in the Americas, but continues to use the local and well-established ones in several European markets.

The Vayama often had significantly lower prices than other OTA’s. They somehow managed to circumvent the SITI – SOTO pricing that many airlines engage in. Sad to see this option to purchase travel disappear from the Americas.
