Lufthansa Miles&More Postpones Introduction Of Program Overhaul Indefinitely

Lufthansa Miles&More had initially planned to introduce an overhaul of the program in 2021 which was later postponed to 2022 and now apparently the plan has been abandoned altogether.

Miles&More just informed members via email that no changes as initially announced will be forthcoming in 2022 and hasn’t named any future date of possible implementation of this change.

As we initially reported early November 2019 Lufthansa Miles&More had informed members in writing that they will drastically change their program structure in terms of status qualification and validity effective January 1, 2021.

This was then pushed back to 2022 due to the Coronavirus impact on Lufthansa’s business and the booking behavior of the customers.

With an email that just went out to members Lufthansa announced that this program overhaul has been postponed indefinitely.

I’ve only seen this email in German so far.

Basic translation by myself:

Due to the current situation the current Lufthansa status system will remain in place.

The year 2020 is coming to a close and we’re looking back on extraordinary circumstances. As frequent flyer and loyal customer you certainly know about the challenging situation in our industry and are aware of the dynamics that require constant changes and updates to our product line.

Several months ago we’ve informed you about our new status system that was supposed to be in place effective January 2022. Unfortunately we have to inform you today that we can’t implement the launch as originally planned.

For you as a customer that means the current terms & conditions of the Miles & More program will remain in place.

We kindly ask for your understanding and will update you in case of any news in the matter.

The website has not been updated with this announcement yet and neither have all Miles&More members received this mailer at the same time which shows a rather fragmented way of communication (nothing new with Lufthansa).

Miles&More has already cut back the program substantially in the recent years, first by attaching the award miles to the ticket value and then by updating their award chart making award flights more expensive.

Lufthansa has previously mailed out physical letters to their premium customers (HON Circle, Senator) outlining the changes and directing customers to a designated yet defunct website for further information.

The following changes were originally announced:

  • A points based currency system will replace the current status miles measurement
  • Flights flown on LH Group airlines will apparently earn more of these points
  • Lifetime Frequent Traveler & Senator Status will become an official perk of the program
  • Period of status validity will be downgraded from two years to one year only
  • Status Stars will be abolished as they apparently confused the customers

For now this is all obsolete. There are numerous rumors why Lufthansa can’t implement the new system as originally designed. The reasons range from the general business environment to sudden regulatory hurdles and the investments required in order to put the required IT structure in place.

Conclusion

Lufthansa’s overhaul of the Miles&More program is off the table and likely won’t see the light of day anytime soon. It will take years until the impact of the current pandemic has been overcome, year during which Lufthansa has bigger problems than to put a new status system in place.

Those members who were already looking forward to an easier / instant lifetime status with Miles&More will be disappointed. While these changes aren’t being implemented now I wouldn’t rule out that there will be further changes to the award chart in the foreseeable future if Lufthansa decides that their awards are too generous.
