Virgin Australia Velocity has recently opened a status match campaign for their direct competition, elite members of Qantas and now the promotion has been expanded to more eligible programs.
The status match is now open to all OneWorld member airlines as well as Emirates, Air New Zealand and also Fiji Airways elite members.
Velocity offers to match Qantas Elites to their Gold level for three months, followed by a challenge to retain the status for another year.
This particular campaign follows what you could call the “restart” of Virgin Australia after the takeover by Bain Capital and the domestic re-opening of Australia after a year of severe lockdowns due to the Covid-19 situation.
You can access Velocity landing page here for further details.
To qualify you must be a Qantas Frequent Flyer Gold, Platinum, Platinum One or hold eligible frequent flyer membership of an Eligible Airline, to fast track to Velocity elite membership with Discover Gold. View the list of eligible airlines and express interest today.
Velocity (we) are offering eligible Velocity Frequent Flyer members (you) the ability to trial Gold Status for 3 months (Discover Gold), when you demonstrate your Eligible Frequent Flyer Membership with an Eligible Airline between 12:01AM AEST 7 December 2020 and 11:59PM AEST 4 January 2021.
Eligible Airlines and the corresponding Eligible Frequent Flyer Membership include:
|Qantas Frequent Flyer||Gold
|Air New Zealand||Airpoints Gold
|American Airlines||AAdvantage Executive Platinum
AAdvantage Platinum Pro
|British Airways||Executive Club Gold

|S7 Airlines||Priority Platinum
|SriLankan Airlines||FlySmiLes Platinum
Requests have to be made until January 4, 2021 [originally December 21st] in order to be registered and then the status match and trial will be activated.
To extend the Gold status for another 12 months the member is required to earn 80 Status Credits and fly at least one eligible sector during the Discover Gold Status trial.
Now members of all oneWorld programs as well as Air New Zealand, Emirates and Fiji Airways can apply for the status match / challenge as well. I wonder how much the retention rate of matched Gold members will be following the three month trial period.
As I mentioned the last time I covered this, Virgin Australia has run these status match campaigns in the past although right now they only target their direct competitor Qantas, trying to gain foothold in the domestic market again. I remember like 9 years ago they ran a big promotion at the Westfield Mall in Sydney offering a match up to Platinum for members of international competitors as well.
