A LoyaltyLobby reader sent us a question reading upgrade priority between a Lifetime Platinum versus Platinum earned in any given year.
You can access Marriott Bonvoy here.
Here’s the question from the reader:
My wife is MR Platinum lifetime.
As of today she is MR Platinum but had only 46 nights in 2020. (so she needs 4 more nights in 2020)
Is it worth it to do that?
Can hotels see who earned MR P for the year and the year ahead and who just have MR P lifetime.
Does it make a difference at check-in? (getting better upgrades)
Hotels definitely can see who is a lifetime or not.
SPG used to provide hotels a list of incoming elite guests with upgrade ranking based on several factors (never disclosed) within a tier (remember that SPG only had two and later Ambassador too).
I don’t know if Marriott has an official policy on whether hotels should upgrade Lifetime Platinum members over Platinums or vice versa.
However, hotels tend to upgrade elite members, at least within a tier, who are frequent visitors at their property over those who are on their first stay.
Personally, I would not spend cash or points for unnecessary four nights to reach 50 in 2020 (unless you can turn it into a festive staycation!).
The 50 nights would allow you to choose one of the Annual Choice Benefit-options, although the only worthwhile option at this level is the five Suite Night Awards (that may or may not clear).
You can now get Platinum status by merely having a certain co-branded credit card in the US. At least, the Lifetime Platinum requirements now are stricter than that.
