Reader Question: Getting Marriott Bonvoy Status Match & Challenge Approved (Documents Rejected)


Today we have a Reader Question from someone who is trying for weeks to get his Marriott Bonvoy Status Match & Challenge approved but the program always rejects bis documents.

Last year Marriott Bonvoy has launched a new status match in combination with a 15 night challenge for members holding elite tier status with Accor, Hilton, Hyatt, or IHG.

Eligible members will see their Marriott Bonvoy status elevated to Gold or Platinum for 90 days, during which they need to complete the challenge to keep the status through February 2022.

The previously available challenge that was available by just calling up Marriott and asking for it has been suspended since late November 2020.

Your Marriott Bonvoy status is upgraded to Gold or Platinum for 90 days. You need to consume a minimum of 5 nights to retain Gold or 15 to retain Platinum through February 2022. Only paid nights count towards fulfilling the challenge requirement.

If you complete the challenge, the year count towards the lifetime requirement. The 90 day challenge period starts once Marriott has processed the match and upgraded the status.

Our reader Sherwan has some issues with this process and writes:

As per your article from August 27th I’ve tried many times to get my Hilton Honors Gold matched to Marriott Platinum.

I’ve now submitted my documents three on three occasions and they were rejected every single time. Why is Marriott so picky with the items sent in? My references are all 100% correct.

Marriott is indeed very particular when it comes to verify the status match request, for example they ask for an actual folio of a recent hotel stay from the program that the customer uses to match:

I really wonder why this requirement of the hotel bill as most people don’t keep their hotel receipts. At least I don’t, I’m throwing them away as soon as the points have posted. A screenshot or pdf of my stay history should be enough but no, Marriott wants a folio.

I’m not sure what exactly the problem is with the readers submission and I urged him to contact Marriott to figure out if it’s an issue with the format or something else.

There is very little that can be wrong here, it’s a simple screenshot of the account and a hotel folio. Should you not have access to a recent folio many programs allow to download recent hotel bills, alternatively it’s always possible to contact a property and have it sent.

Programs have mostly stopped matches and challenges that give you the elite status immediately but Marriott Bonvoy has now brought it back during rather challenging times.
