Here’s the question from the reader:

If I book a 5 night stay using 3 Hilton AMEX Surpass free night certificates (the kind you get for spending a specific amount each year) for the first 3 nights.

I then book the last two nights with points, will the fifth night become free?

This is a topic that we covered the other week on the Whine Wednesday-column the limitations of these free night certificates.

Whine Wednesday: Free Night Certificate Limitations

You can get the fifth night free with both Hilton and Marriott if the reservation is made purely on points.

You cannot combine certificates and points, OR you cannot use four free night certificates to get the fifth night free.

There are often category, points, or days of the week (only weekends) limitations on hotel loyalty program certificates. You should know them before you sign up for (usually affiliated credit cards that give them).

Many are surprised that you cannot get the fifth night free with both Hilton and Marriott when combining free night certificates and points for an award reservation.

Perhaps this is something they should work on?
