Air France – KLM Flying Blue Extends Member Tiers By Additional 12-Months

Air France – KLM has sent out emails to Flying Blue tier members about an additional tier extension of 12-months for those whose status was set to expire between March – December 2021.

They will also retain the Surplus XP that I have never entirely understood what they meant (read more here).

You can access Flying Blue’s page for Covid-19 measures here:

Here’s the announcement from Flying Blue:

EXTENDING OUR COVID-19 LOYALTY MEASURES!

In the context of the COVID-19 crisis, we made a promise to you in 2020 to maintain your status and protect your surplus XP, and we are now renewing that promise for 2021!

We hope that this year will bring new opportunities to travel with us again. To at least give you peace of mind about your Flying Blue status, we are renewing our promise to maintain your current level for a further period, so you can enjoy your benefits whenever the time is right. Additionally, we are extending our previous surplus XP support measure, to give you the same head start as you had before.

So, for our Elite members with a qualification period ending between March 2021 and December 2021:

  • We will continue to maintain your level for a further period.
  • We will continue to protect your surplus XP.

We hope that you welcome this news, and that the extension of our COVID-19 loyalty measures will enable you to make the most of your benefits.

I have collected quite a few XP’s flying around here in Mexico in business class:

Conclusion

The main point of the email that I received from Flying Blue was that the tier is extended by an additional year that should not come as a surprise to anyone, and I don’t believe that other European airlines have any other choice.

Most non-essential travel is either banned or highly discouraged in Europe.

If airlines and hotels like to retain any of their elite members until this Covid-19 is mostly behind us, they will keep rolling the status extensions, and rightfully so.

I am surprised at how many XP’s I have earned on relatively cheap AeroMexico business class flights that I have taken here in Mexico, where I have been since January 1st. I should reach 100 XPs by the time I continue my trip.
