Koh Samui

Choengmon Beach is on the North Easternmost point of the island and well developed.

Here’s the announcement from the IHG:

The 138-key luxury boutique beachfront property on Choengmon Beach will open later this year where guests will enjoy Kimpton’s signature heartfelt service and locally-inspired design features. A short drive to Chaweng Beach, Fisherman’s Village walking street and Koh Samui International Airport, domestic and international travellers alike will benefit from its convenient location and proximity to major tourist attractions.

Tranquility and privacy will be easy to find at Kimpton Koh Samui as it will offer stunning luxury pool villas with unique direct access to the beach. Two-thirds of the guest accommodation will be suites or villas and the vast majority of the hotel inventory offering spectacular views over the Gulf of Thailand.

Capturing the Kimpton brand’s playful and sophisticated design, innovative approach to restaurants and bars, and immersive guest experiences that foster genuine human connections, this luxury boutique hotel will infuse local culture, textures and colours with every touchpoint of the guest experience and speak to the location’s story for an authentic and meaningful stay. It will feature four distinctive restaurants and bars as well as a pool, spa, fitness centre, Kids Club and a 124 sqm multi-purpose meetings and events space. With thoughtful service, perks and amenities, guests and their pets can expect a warm welcome and memorable stay.

Serena Lim, Vice President, Development, South East Asia and Korea, IHG, said:

“We are excited to continue our long-standing partnership with NYE Estate whom we share a common vision of elevating and growing the hospitality sector in Thailand, as well as new partners Multiply Partners and Capstone Asset to bring Kimpton’s heartfelt approach to hospitality to Koh Samui as we continue to expand the brand across the region as well as globally.

“The strength of IHG’s brand portfolio has led to some exciting growth opportunities here in Thailand and this signing is a great example of that. There’s an appetite from owners to join the IHG family of brands and benefit from the power of our enterprise, as the strength and resilience of our brands come to the fore in the current environment.”

Messrs. Titiwat Kuvjitsuwan and Soravit Chairoj, Executive Directors of Choengmon Real Estate, said:

“When we researched and experienced the Kimpton brand we knew it was the ideal choice for our stunning luxury beachfront Koh Samui project. The positioning, the design, the accommodation mix and the importance of restaurants and bars to the overall guest experience fit perfectly into the brand’s distinctive design and breadth and style of service.

“Working in partnership with IHG’s team we are confident that Kimpton Koh Samui will deliver memorable guest experiences through which travellers feel genuinely cared for, much like they do in Bangkok and other Kimpton hotels around the world.”

Conclusion

Let’s see when this hotel opens up. There is not much demand for new hotels in Koh Samui until tourists are welcomed to Thailand without quarantine, and it is unclear when the country has reached this point (they just extended the quarantine back to 14 nights from 7).

The most luxurious hotels tend not to be on this hectic stretch of Koh Samui but in the Southern part (Conrad or InterContinental). A new Hyatt Regency is opening up that has been delayed, likely due to lack of demand.

Bangkok Airways own the airport, and there have been talks for years to build another one in the Southwest section of the island that would allow bigger planes to land (right now, only single-aisle ones can). Also, flying to Koh Samui has been relatively expensive within Thailand than other destinations due to the owner.

Sebastian was just in Koh Samui, and I need to check all these new hotels out once Thailand again welcomes international arrivals.
