Hilton Honors today announced that it would extend free night certificates issued before May 1, 2020, until January 3, 2022.
You can also continue using them any day of the week. Free nights certificates issued May 1 – December 31, 2020, are valid for 24 months, and those issued in 2021 won’t expire before December 31, 2022.

Here’s the update that Hilton shared with us:
- Hilton Honors American Express Card Members with Free Weekend Night Reward certificates issued before May 1, 2020 that were set to expire Aug. 31, 2021 are now valid until Jan. 3, 2022.
- As a reminder, Free Weekend Night Reward certificates issued from May 1, 2020 through Dec. 31, 2020 are valid for 24 months, and certificates issued between Jan. 1, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2021 will expire on Dec. 31, 2022.
- Free Weekend Night Reward certificates can continue to be used any night of the week.
Hilton Honors have cut in half the elite status requirements in 2021, waived points expiry through December 31, 2021, and extended status for members who failed to reach the qualification requirements in 2020:
It is good that Hilton decided to extend Honors free night certificates earned from the cobranded credit cards and allow members to use them any day of the week.
Initially, the weekend limitation was in place so that business travelers could not use them. Historically, hotel occupancies have been lower over the weekends (polar opposite right now – weekends often sold out while weekdays close to empty).
